Inhabitants of Gomoa Brofo in the Gomoa West district of the Central Region have made a call to authorities to provide them with toilet facilities.
According to residents, the lack of lavatories there has forced them to attend to nature’s call in the bush or in black polythene bags, which they later dispose of at the communal dumpsite, a situation that threatens the health of the community.
The assemblyman for the area, Opoku Benson, speaking with Accra News Saturday July 30, renewed calls for a communal place of convenience.
“Our biggest problem here in Gomoa Brofo is [lack of] toilets. We have no toilet in this town…” he said.
He explained that a six-seater lavatory for residents constructed over 15 years was full and had, therefore, been abandoned.
Mr Benson said he informed the assembly that the community would need a sewage truck for suction of the excrement but the assembly said it had not yet identified any place to discharge the human waste and had asked the community to make land available for that purpose. “But we cannot find any piece of land for deposition of the excreta,” he lamented.
The assemblyman added that the NDC parliamentary candidate for Gomoa West, Samuel Fletcher, had earlier asked the community to secure land for the take-off of his project to provide 38 Gomoa communities with toilets. But after obtaining the land, Benson disclosed, the MP aspirant ran into financial problems and the project failed.
Responding, the Gomoa West District Chief Executive (DCE), Theophilus Adu Mensah, said he had not been informed by the community of its need for a toilet. He said the community had been provided with a six-classroom block, a clinic and teachers’ quarters – projects it had requested of the assembly – and he was not in the know about the community’s need for a toilet.
“No one has requested for toilets. They’ve not requested for it,” he added.
