Government advised to set up a permanent body on pensions

Cape Coast, Oct. 26, GNA- The Central Regional secretariat of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), on Tuesday appealed to the Government to transform the Presidential Commission on Pension into a permanent institution that would give advise on all issues relating to pension.

Mr. Thomas Baafi, the Regional Secretary of GNAT made the appeal during the public sitting of the Commission in the Cape Coast Municipality.

The Municipal Secretary of the Civil Servants Association Mr. Kwamena Dennis told the Commission that the general consensus of organised labour was that workers needed an improved and sustainable Pension Scheme.

Mr. Charles Techie-Menson, a retired Agriculturist called for the re-introduction of the Cap-30 pension scheme and the review of salaries of low income earners since income levels played a very crucial role in determining pensions.

The Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Thomas Ango Bediako said the body is independent, non-partisan and non-sectarian and cut across partisan politics, religion and ethnicity. He said members were tasked to analyse the existing pensions schemes, solicit views from the public and come out with recommendations that would ensure income security for all workers. 26 Oct. 04
