IGP activates nationwide election task forces

The acting Inspector General of Police, John Kudalor, has inaugurated election task forces across the nation ahead of the 2016 general elections.

The task forces will be operational at national, regional and district levels.

Speaking at the inauguration on Wednesday, January 20, Commissioner of Police (COP) Kudalor assured of the preparedness of the Ghana Police Service to combat any misunderstanding before, during and after the elections.

‘Worst scenario’

He said the police always prepare for a worst case scenario regarding public events like elctions.

“So we are prepared for the worst scenario but we are sure that we won’t get to the worst scenario but whatever it is I think we are ready to contain the situation,” he assured.

He said a meeting will be held with political leadership in an effort to disband political vigilante groups.

“We are going to engage the leadership of all political parties to tell them the stand of the law so far as their proliferation and formation are concerned.”

The election task forces shall have seven sub-committees including ballot security in their operations.

Outgoing Minister of Interior, Mark Woyongo, commended the security forces for their professionalism during elections, calling on them to step up efforts for the 2016 polls.

Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission Dr Amadu Sulley assured of transparency on the part of the election-organising body to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections.
