Accra, April 25, GNA - The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on Friday organized a tax sensitization seminar for market queens of the Madina market complex as part of activities marking the fourth annual revenue week celebration.
The market queens would in turn educate their members on the need to honour tax obligations to help in the development of the nation. Mr. Kojo Dua, Principal Inspector of Taxes at the IRS, Head Office said it had become important to target the informal sector who often evaded the payment of taxes.
He said the service had also introduced the Tax Stamp System which could be paid on quarterly basis to make payment easy for the informal and small businesses to ensure compliance. Mr. Dua said a similar exercise took place at the Agblobloshie and
Kaneshie markets in Accra and urged the women to regularly pay their taxes to enable government to undertake development projects. Nana Bobi Fouku, of the market queens association asked the tax officers to frequently visit the markets to whip up interest in the payment of taxes.
Mr. Charles Adjei Mensah, Greater Accra Regional Director of IRS encouraged those who were filing returns to continue as the stamp system was for small and medium businesses.
