Journalist asked to bring positive influence on Nkonya-Alavanyo conflict

Ho, Aug. 6, GNA - The Volta Regional Security Committee (REGSEC) on Thursday urged journalists to bring their positive influence to bear on the search for a lasting peace in the protracted Alavanyo-Nkonya conflict.

The Regional Minister and chairman of REGSEC, Mr Kwasi Owusu-Yeboa made the call when he addressed a second press conference in three days, following the ambushing and shooting to death of two farmers from Nkonya last Tuesday.

He said sensational and inaccurate media reports on the situation in the area tended to inflame passions and undermine efforts at finding a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Mr Owusu-Yeboa said good judgement based on investigations and analyses of information flowing from the area, was essential in determining whether such pieces of information were worthy of public consumption and helpful to the cause of bringing peace to the beleaguered people. Mr Owusu-Yeboa said REGSEC had made some far-reaching proposals to the National Security Council, for a more robust approach to end the conflict.

He said the difficult terrain, inadequate number of security men on the ground and the limited mandate of the REGSEC were obstacles to dealing effectively with the situation.

Mr Owusu-Yuba told the two factions that, the conflict was a drain on resources for development and a stain on the image of the Region.
