KMA Boss Weeps Over Filth

MADAM Patricia Appiagyei, the Chief Executive of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has expressed worry about the appalling insanitary situation in the city.

Despite the numerous measures and mechanisms put in place by the assembly, including the privatization of street sweeping, door-to door waste collection and dredging of drains, the problem is persisting, she bewailed.

The KMA boss appealed to residents of the city to keep their surroundings clean to compliment the efforts of the assembly in preventing outbreak of diseases like malaria and cholera.

Madam Appiagyei made these remarks at the official launching of a Public Education Campaign on sanitation, in Kumasi last Thursday ahead of the CAN 2008 tournament.

Under the theme, ‘Ensuring a healthy and beautiful country for Ghana 2008 and beyond”, the programme was aimed at instilling discipline in travellers, drivers, driver’s mates and hawkers so as to promote proper waste management in the city.

The programme was organized by Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZL), a private waste management company in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment (MLGRDE), Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies (MMDA), GPRTU/PROTOA and co-operatives.

The KMA boss admonished residents in the metropolis to change their attitudes toward waste management, reminding them that the assembly was spending huge sums of tax payers’ money in dealing with the situation.

Madam Appiagyei gave the assurance of the assembly’s readiness to deploy personnel of the town council to arrest people who would disregard the assembly’s by-laws on sanitation, and added that keeping the city clean should be the collective responsibility of all residents.

While entreating residents to ensure good sanitation, especially as the CAN 2008 tournament approaches, the KMA boss ordered house owners in the metropolis to respect and uphold the by-laws of the assembly by painting their houses before the tournament.

In an effort to fulfill its social responsibility of keeping the environment clean, ZL donated 4000 litter bins free of charge to the leadership of the GPRTU to be placed at lorry stations.

Of the quantity, 2401 bins were released for distribution in the Ashanti region.

In her remarks, Madam Sharon Quarshie, ZL Operations Executive cited attitudinal change and enforcement of KMA by-laws as the surest way to guarantee clean environment in the metropolis.

She promised her organisation’s preparedness to assist in the promotion of clean environment and appealed to the public to cooperate with the city authorities to enforce the assembly’s by-laws.

Mr. Kwaku Atiamo, Secretary of the Neoplan Station, Kumasi branch, advised drivers and commuters to cooperate to restore the status of the city and promised that the bins would be put to good use.

In his succinct remarks, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. E. A. Owusu Ansah entreated residents of Kumasi to play vital roles to ensure that Kumasi is restored to its status as the Garden City of West Africa.
