Ketabusco commemorates 65th anniversary

Keta, July 27, GNA - The Member of Parliament (MP) for Keta, Mr Dan Abodakpi has called on stakeholders of educational institution to help create a congenial atmosphere that would promote effective teaching and learning in schools.

He said for any school to meet the competitive educational standards, there must be strict discipline, good remuneration for the staff as well as modernised school infrastructure to set the right tone for excellent academic performance.

Mr Abodakpi was speaking at the 65th handing-over and awards ceremony of the Keta Business Secondary School at Keta at the weekend. The MP urged the old students and all well-meaning people to pool resources to support the school, adding: "It is morally binding on all past students to return to the school what they have received in their student days."

The Headmaster of the school, Mr Wilson Dzogbeta said since the establishment of the school 65 years ago, it had competed favourably with the well-endowed schools in the Region in academic work, music, sports and agriculture.

He said the school was adjudged the overall champion during the 2003/2004 Keta District Inter-Schools Sports Festival and also the regional best in agriculture during the Regional Farmers' Day celebration held at Jasikan in the Volta Region.

Mr Dzogbeta, however, lamented that despite the school being one of the oldest business institutions in the Region and a major contributor to the manpower needs of the country, it lacked basic teaching equipment, adequate school infrastructure and essential amenities usually seen with other big schools.

For example the school has no administration block up-to-date; no staff accommodation, not even for the headmaster, no assembly hall; dinning hall or a science laboratory, even though science is offered as a major subject.

Mr Dzogbeta, therefore, appealed to the Government, non-governmental organisations and philanthropic organisations to come to the aid of the school to construct a two-storey classroom block to house Home Economic, Typing Pool and Computer Laboratory.

The school also need a bus for easy movement of staff and students. The Chairman of the occasion, Nana Annan II, Nkosuohene of Akrofu in the Mankessim Traditional Area, advised the students to set goals in life and work hard towards them.

He also stressed the need to be polite and humble and live simple and modest life.

Nana Annan, who is known in private life as Mr Anthony Kwabena Duker, a Banker, also advised the female students to abstain from sex so as to avoid contracting the deadly disease, AIDS.

The most disciplined student award instituted by Mr Winfred Kwami VI, the Vice President of the Old Students Association, went to Miss Comfort Ziorklui and Master Joy Glago. They received 750,000 cedis each, a Kente stole, citation certificate and a book as their prizes. Mr Leonard Adzibolosu, Mr Christopher Xetor and Miss Atsufui Anyigba received 350,000 cedis for excelling in the 2003 Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations.
