Two people are reported dead as 21 others remain in critical condition after some passengers were involved in a road crash along the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway in the early hours of Thursday July 14.
Class FM’s Central regional correspondent Raymond Kwofie reports that the deceased were staff of Cocoa Processing Company in Takoradi, who were travelling to parliament in Accra to listen to Seth Terkper address issues concerning the company.
The accident happened at about 3:30am Thursday when a military ambulance with registration number 42GA-57 and a Mercedes Benz Sprinter, also with registration number ER 1219-14, collided.
In an earlier interview with Prince Minkah, host of the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM, Chief Superintendent Felix Cosmos, the Commander of the Cape Coast Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), narrated: “It was around 3:30am this dawn that I had a call that an accident has occurred, so I immediately dispatched men to the scene.
“It happened precisely on the outskirts of Komenda Sefwi, more than 20 kilometres from Cape Coast and it involved a military ambulance with registration number 42GA-57 which was from Accra towards Takoradi and a Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus with registration number ER 1219-14 loaded with passengers from Takoradi heading towards Accra.
“It was a head-on collision so, at the time that we got to the scene, all the injured had been conveyed to Takoradi and the Central Regional Teaching Hospital respectively.”
He added: “Our information was that some (victims) are in critical condition and we are now making follow-ups to the respective hospitals to visit those who got injured.”
Meanwhile, Finance Minister Seth Terkper could not make it to parliament for the discussion regarding the company whose staff had embarked on the trip.
Majority Chief Whip Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak offered his condolences to the bereaved families as he also apologised for the minister’s absence.
