Krachiwura, Nana Mprah Besemuna III, has condemned acts by Ghana Television (GTV) which he claimed is a sabotage of the demand for a territorial split of the Volta Region.
According to him, the Volta Regional office of the state broadcaster decided to play advertisements when a news item on a rally on the creation of the proposed ‘Oti Region’ held in Jasikan, was being aired.
Speaking at a rally in Ketekrachi in the Krachi West District, a bitter Nana Mprah Besemuna III said “I have never witnessed this before, when a news item on the massive rally we had in Jasikan was being aired on GTV, viewers in the Volta Region were watching adverts while those in other parts of the country watched the rally.”
“Meanwhile a headline reading ‘Oti Region Jasikan Rally’ was in the news crawl... if they should repeat it, we will meet them squarely in Ho.”
He added that the Joint Consultative Committee (JCC), spearheading the demand for a new region had written to the Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa, to inquire why such actions were taken.
Nana Mprah Besemuna, however, emphasized that the JCC would not be intimidated by moves of factions opposing their bid for a new region and implored southerners living in the Oti enclave to support the bid for the new Region, which would harness development to the jurisdiction.
He explained that “persons against our bid for a new region are those leading a secession of the Trans-Volta Togoland. They said this during their demonstrations in Sogakofe and Ho. We don’t want to remain part of the Volta Region, how much more join Togo.”
He, therefore, appealed to President Akufo-Addo to expedite action on the final report of the Commission of Inquiry into the creation of new regions, which would be submitted by the end of June.
“...the Commission of Inquiry will recommend the creation of the Oti Region based on our submissions. So prepare yourself, Oti Region is here”, he said.
Nana Mprah who doubles as the Chairman of the JCC urged residents to commit to the referendum, which is the final legal requirement for the creation of a new region.
“Tell the good stories of the benefits of the new region to everyone you meet and let them vote 100% yes for the Oti Region”.
