The group Concerned Small-Scale Miners Union of Ghana (CSSMUG) has suspended it’s planned ‘ku me preko’ demonstration which was scheduled for Tuesday, June 26, 2018.

In an earlier press release, the association expressed dissatisfaction with the government in its delays in lifting the ban placed on small-scale mining in the country.

The association indicated that, despite consistent assurances by the President and key stakeholders to get them back to work, they would picket to register their displeasure as the inactions so far have rendered most members bed-ridden with sicknesses whilst some have lost properties and others have died.

They insisted that the President’s announcement of a soon to be road ‘roadmap’ to help lift the ban was not only intangible at its best but has only heightened their anxieties and fueled mistrust for the government.

However, in what seems to be a twist of events, Rooney Osei Bempah, an executive member of the union in an interview on Kumasi-based Pure FM’s flagship political program ‘Bresosem’ with Dr. Otchere Addai Mensah (Dean, KNUST Allied Health Sciences) monitored by MyNewsGh.com revealed that, the union has decided to suspend the much publicized ‘ku me preko’ demonstration as they have noted the President’s assurance. He also mentioned that as a result of the President’s recent meeting with some of the Union’s leaders and chiefs, a month’s ultimatum has been given to allow the President deliver on the assurances.

Thousands of affected small-scale miners were expected to throng the streets of the Ashanti region in protest to the government after its failed lift the ban on mining for the past two years.
