Kumasi Archdiocese bags over 530 million cedis

Kumasi, Aug 15, GNA - The Kumasi Archdiocese of the Catholic Church at the weekend bagged over 530 million cedis at a fund-raising in aid of the Catholic University at Fiapre near Sunyani. The Amakom parish contributed over 60 million cedis out of the total amount, thereby making the highest contributor amongst the parishes.

The remaining parishes realised amounts ranging from five million cedis to 50 million cedis.

Most Rev George Kocherry, the Apostolic Nuncio, led the funding raising at the Amakom parish to Ghana, while the other 18 Bishops who had gathered in Kumasi for the activity also led the congregations in other parishes to conduct the fund raising activity. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi, Dr Kwame Donkor-Fordwor, the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the University, said the amount realised was part of the Ashanti Region's quota of two billion cedis in respect of contribution towards the development of the university.

He said a total of 10 billion cedis were urgently needed for the construction of 12 lecture halls and administration blocks as well as a hostel capable of accommodating 100 students and a canteen. Dr Donkor-Fordwor, who single-handedly contributed 700 million cedis in support of development of the university, called on individuals to make personal donations towards the project. 15 Aug 05
