The Kusaasis in the Upper East Region have unveiled a historic statue in honor of their revered overlord, Naba Abugurago Asigiri Azoko ll.

The monument, according to the Kusaasis, is a commemoration of the chief’s forty years on the paramount skin of Kusaug. It is situated at the ‘Bawku Highways’, a central part of the territory.

The chairman of the Samanpiid committee, Solomon Awini, explains that the monument is historic and that the residents of the area will endeavor to protect it from envious and evil people.

The ceremony saw hundreds of natives and visitors gracing the unveil. Cultural dances from all parts of the Kusaug territory were displayed at the palace of the Chief as part of the celebration.

The presidential aspirant of the People National Convention, Bernard Mornah, who also graces the event, charged the youth of Bawku to redirect the their energy to productive ventures instead of violence. ‘I will admonish the youth to channel their energy to something productive….” He said.

The Kusaasis on December 31 this year will be celebrating their 37th Samanpiid festival. The festival is celebrated annually to mark a successful harvest, and protection from their ancestors. It unites the tribe and serves as a platform for them to reassess their progress as a people.

Abugurago Asigiri Azoko II resumed the skin in 1984 after succeeding his father, Azoko the first, making it forty years after his reign.
