Akyem Takyiman (E/R), July 6, GNA - The Kwaebibirem District Assembly is to institute an award scheme for pupils who put up excellent performance in their schools.
Addressing the 13th Basic Schools Festival of Arts at Akyem Takyimang the District Chief Executive, Mr Reginald Aboagye Osae, appealed to pupils in the district to improve upon their academic performance so as to benefit from the scheme.
He said it was disheartening to find the youth engaged in immoral practices like drug abuse, alcoholism, armed robbery, cyber fraud (sakawa) and homosexuality.
Mr Osae said teachers were capable of inculcating in pupils good moral values like humility, obedience and respect.
He therefore urged teachers to be role models and set good examples for pupils to emulate.
The District Director of Education, Mrs Gladys Amoako Appiagyei, said currently the high increase in moral decadence was a threat to society mentioning teenage pregnancy, rape and defilement, armed robbery, child prostitution, child neglect and truancy as examples.
She said this showed that the country's culture and morals had broken down and as such measures should taken to reverse the trend.
