Kwamo appeals for help to excavate refuse heap

Kwamo (Ash), May 10, GNA - The chief and people of Kwamo in the Ejisu-Juaben District have appealed to the District Assembly to expedite action on the excavation and clearing of a heap of refuse that had engulfed the town and posing health hazards to the people.

Nana Osei Amoako Mensah II, Kwamohene, who made the appeal, was worried that the situation was so bad that it could lead to an epidemic if the assembly did not swiftly intervene.

Nana Amoako Mensah was addressing inhabitants of Kwamo, organised groups, clubs and associations after a clean-up exercise at Kwamo. The exercise, which was to climax the National Constitution Week celebration in the district, was jointly organised by the Ejisu-Juaben District office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Kwamo community.

The chief observed that the refuse heap, which was in the centre of the town, was not only a breeding ground for mosquitoes, but also a ground from where dirty water flowed into the community's only source of drinking water thereby polluting it.

Mr Johnson Opoku, District Director of the NCCE, entreated the people to make the cleaning of their environment a regular feature. He disabused the minds of some people that the NCCE confined its activities to only Constitutional Week celebrations.

Mr Opoku said the NCCE carried out a variety of educational programmes in various communities and educational institutions, noting, "since this is normally done on the quite, people wrongly perceive the NCCE as having nothing to do besides the Constitution Week programme."
