LGWU asks for protection for its members

Accra, Feb. 22, GNA - The Local Government Workers Union (LGWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has called on District Assemblies to provide adequate security for its revenue collectors to enable them discharge their duties creditably. Mr William Mensah, General Secretary of the LGWU, who made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Wednesday, said currently the collectors were being intimidated with some sustaining injuries.

He condemned the unpatriotic conduct of some miscreants whose aim was to dodge the payment of taxes to deprive the Assemblies of funds for development.

Mr Mensah said, Mr Fredrick Essah, Revenue Superintendent of the Awutu-Efutu District Assembly suffered injuries at Kasoa on duty. Mr Mensah stressed the need for security in view of the fact that traders at old market at Kasoa had been given up to the end of February, this year to Evacuate, to the Akweiley New Market, near Kasoa. He assured members that the Union was solidly behind them in their efforts to raise revenue for the Assemblies and the nation.
