Lecturer to unveil mystery behind Osu Oxford Street

Accra, July 29, GNA - A Ghanaian Professor of English and Director of the Centre for Diaspora and Transitional Studies at University of Toronto, Canada would on July 30, 2008 offer insights into what made Osu Oxford Street the ever-popular attraction.

Professor Ato Quayson would deliver the lecture, on the topic: "Globalisation, Urban Growth and Social Inequality: Interpreting Oxford Street, Accra" at the British Council.

It would focus on using the street as a key to understanding aspects of the city's social evolution.

Among the themes to be explored would be the impact of colonial urban planning, the relationship between the Oxford Street area and the Central Business District (Makola), the contradictions between the lively economic activities on the street and the nature of household economies within its immediate vicinity and the impact of globalization on basic traditional social organisational concepts such as the "weku shia" (family house).

Professor Quayson lectured for many years at the Oxford University in the United Kingdom before moving to the University of Toronto.
