The Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, has called on settler farmers to disregard the pre-election propaganda that the NPP would sack them from the Akyem and Ashanti lands when it gained power.
He was addressing the people of Bomponso No.2, a group of settler farmers from the Ga Adangbe area as part of his tour of the constituency on Sunday.
Other areas visited were Okanta, Kwasi Komfo, Anhwenease and Adadeintem.
He called on the people to cooperate with the contractor working on the two-kilometre Bomponso No.2 - Bomponso No.1 - Tibidi road and promised to ensure that the dilapidated bridge on river Bompon leading to the village was rehabilitated.
Nana Akuffo-Addo observed that of all the governments that had ruled the country since independence, that of President Kufour had given the greatest attention to the problems of cocoa farmers and increased the producer price four times within two years.
He noted that it was not possible for the government to solve all the problems of the country within four years but said its first two years in office was a demonstration that it had taken the right decisions.
At Kwasi Komfo, Mr Emmanuel Victor Asihene, East Akim District Chief Executive, announced that the government had selected six districts in the Eastern Region including East Akim for a National Cocoa Programme, which would start this year.
Under the programme, cocoa farmers would be introduced to the application of fertilisers to help them increase their output to by over 500 per cent.
He said the completion of the Akyem Odumase-Okanta-Kwesi Komfo road would open up the area and promised that the District Assembly would rehabilitate the Akyem Odumase market.
Okyeame Francis Safro, on behalf of the Chiefs and people of Kwasi Komfo appealed for support to acquire more electric poles to extend electricity to the village.
He said the people had mobilised eight million cedis through the kilo-kilo deduction from cocoa farmers to support the project.
