Accra, March 10, GNA - Miss Akua Sena Dansua, NDC-North Dayi, on Friday called for an urgent intervention to solve the water crisis that has hit Kpando and its environs leading to the death of a little boy.
The Member in a statement on the water situation in her constituency, told Parliament of the death of the boy, who got drowned in the Volta Lake at Kpando Torkor in the Volta Region, a few days ago when he attempted to fetch water for the use of his household. "May his soul rest in peace and may his death not go unrewarded and may the authorities concerned be moved by this unfortunate loss of life of an innocent boy to respond to appeals by the people of Kpando and its environs to now address the perennial water problem," she said.
She said Kpando was strategically positioned as a transit point to the eastern and northern parts of the country; had three secondary schools and several businesses and financial institutions and, therefore, a lot of pressure was being put on the available basic infrastructure, especially, water.
"Mr Speaker, the irony of Kpando's situation is that Kpando is situated close to the Volta Lake. It is so near and yet so far from benefiting from this crucial resource. It will thus not be difficult to extract water from the Volta Lake at Kpando Torkor for the use of the people at Kpando as well as the entire constituency," Ms Dansua said. "Alternatively, water could be extracted from the Kpeve Head Works.." "In both cases, what is left is the political will to implement this project to solve this perennial water problem of Kpando once and for all," she said.
Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, in his contributions said it was not for the lack of good will that Kpando was going through this water crisis but rather that the infrastructure in the country had seen no expansion to meet the ever increasing demands for water.
He said it was the same infrastructure since independence, which was catering for 20 million Ghanaians.
He said in the short term, the Ghana Water Company Limited was going to use some of its internally generated funds to solve part of the water problem in the Kpando area.
