Saltpond (C/R), April 19, GNA - The Member of Parliament for Mfantseman West, Mr Stephen Asamoah Boateng has instituted a 100 million cedi scholarship scheme for brilliant but needy students in his constituency.
The scheme is to be funded from the MPs share of the District Assemblies Common Fund.
Mr Asamoah Boateng, who is also the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Modernisation of the Capital City, announced the scheme at three separate fora at Saltpond, Anomabo and Mankessim on Monday. The fora dubbed "MPs Forum", was to offer Mr Asamoah Boateng the opportunity to brief his constituents on events in Parliament and also to answer questions from the public.
The Deputy Minister said part of the fund would be used to begin work on the construction of a recreational centre for the youth and the aged.
He said the centre would comprise a library, a canteen and a place for indoor games.
A participant suggested that officials of the Department of Cooperatives should be involved in the selection of groups to benefit from micro credit facilities to avoid fraud and to ensure prompt repayment.
Mr Robert Quainoo Arthur, Mfantseman District Chief Executive enumerated a number of projects that the MP had initiated in the area. At Anomabo, Nana Kweku Aggrey, Mpuntuhene of the town announced that an area near Fort William had been designated as a tourist attraction and appealed to the sector ministry to help the community to erect busts of some prominent citizens such as Dr Kwegyir Aggrey and Ekem Ferguson at the area to attract tourists.
A number of fishermen expressed concern about the irregular supply of premix fuel to the community.
The forum commended the MP for initiating the programme and appealed to him to make it a regular feature.
