Minister advocates peaceful 2016 Polls

Alhaji Mohammed Limuna-Muniru, the Northern Regional Minister has appealed to Ghanaians to be peace ambassadors as the country prepares for the 2016 general election.

He said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was totally committed to the peace and stability of the country and urged all to make genuine commitment to working towards a peaceful election in a campaign devoid of intimidation, harassment, and violence.

Alhaji Limuna-Muniru made the appeal in a speech, read on his behalf, at Dalun in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region, on Wednesday, during the 22nd Annual Seminar of the Ghana Developing Communities Association (GDCA).

It was on the theme: “Enlivening District Level Elections in Ghana”.

Alhaji Limuna-Muniru expressed happiness that since the coming into force of the 1992 Constitution, the country had been having peaceful elections, which had strengthened Ghana’s democratic credentials.

He noted that the just-ended District Assembly elections failed to get more women into the decentralisation process where they could contribute meaningfully to decision making and appealed to Ghanaians to consider putting more women in decision-making systems.

Yeni-Gushei Na Professor Abubakr Al-Hassan, Chairman of GDCA, applauded the unique relationship that had existed between the GDCA and its Danish friends and commended them for their development interventions in the area.

He said without the support of the Danish friends, the varied projects the GDCA had undertaken would not have been materialised.

Alhaji Razak Shani, the Northern Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), noted that some District Assembly Members lacked adequate knowledge to advance the course of development.

He observed that due to that some District Chief Executives took undue advantage of the system and do what they deemed best without regard to laid down rules.
