Ministry of Local Govt donates books to 138 districts

Accra, Sept. 23, GNA - The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development on Thursday donated over 2.8 million exercise books running into millions of cedis to be distributed in all the 138 districts. The Northern Region received 275,450 while Upper East and Upper West received 158,150 and 94,290 respectively.

Volta and Central Regions had 273,860 and 294,350 respectively while Eastern and Greater Accra Regions also received 385,903 and 281,610.

Ashanti and Brong Ahafo Regions also received 749,060 and 299,680 books. Western Region had 295,200.

Mr Kwadwo Adjei-Darko, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development said government believed in the development of human capacity through education.

According to him, "it is not the resources available to a country that determines a nation's wealth but the quality of education. "That is why my Ministry is assisting in the promotion of quality education in the country and we hope that this would go a long way in reducing poverty."

Mr Adjei-Darko told the District Chief Executives to ensure even distribution of the book in all schools in their areas.

The Minister said it was the Northern Region that was ready to convey their books immediately and he was optimistic that the other regions would receive theirs by the end of October, this year. Ms Rita Tani Iddi, District Chief Executive of Gushegu on behalf of her colleagues thanked the ministry for the books and pledged to ensure the even distribution of the books.

"These books would go a long way to enhance teaching and learning in our schools," Ms Iddi said.
