More than 1,000 trees planted in Kwahu West

Over 1,000 different species of trees have been planted on a 170-acre land released by chiefs and individuals in seven communities in the Kwahu West Municipality under the National Afforestation programme during the past three years.

The Kwahu-West Municipal Coordinator of the National Afforestation Programme, Mr Nelson Effah, disclosed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Nkawkaw on Wednesday.

He said the seedlings included teak, Ofram, Odum, Amere and Cendralela, while the beneficiary communities also included Kwahu Daa, Atibie, Asoboni Rail, Nkawnda old and new site, Nkawnda Number One and Asukawkaw. He said the seedlings were supplied by the African Forestry Limited, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).

Mr Effah said the land owners would be given 30 per cent of the trees upon harvesting when they are matured, while the Forestry Commission would take the rest.

He said some of the challenges facing the programme were irregular payment of allowances to the staff of the programme, and appealed to the government to take steps to address such challenges.
