Yendi (NR), June 11, GNA - The Yendi Municipality in collaboration with development partners, have intensified the training of youth in skill acquisition to help to reduce rural-urban migration, especially the phenomena of "kayayo".
The training, which is under the National Youth Employment Programme covered areas such as dressmaking and hair dressing.
Day-in-day-out the youth leave the Municipality for Kayayo in Accra and Kumasi, the Yendi Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Issah Zakaria, announced this in a speech read for him when Asongtaba Cottage Industries presented 31 Sewing machines to dressmakers at a graduation ceremony at Yendi.
Mr Zakaria commended Asongtaba for offering the training to the girls and boys in order to curb the Kayayo and unemployment in the Municipality.
He indicated that unlike the business of 93kaya," the knowledge acquired in dressmaking and other vocations would forever remain with them.
Mr Zakaria said the Assembly had so far made available GH¢16,000 for the training of the youth under the modules of the National Youth Employment Programme.
He stated that about 410 youth had already been placed under the Community Teaching Assistants Module, and the youth who had opted for Health Extension Module would soon commence in the Municipality.
The Yendi Municipal National Youth Employment Programme Coordinator Mr Umar Salifu Abdul-Rahaman, appealed to parents and guardians of the beneficiaries of the sewing machines to ensure that they put them into productive use.
Mr Umar said more of this type of programmes and packages were in the pipe line for the youth.
According to the Coordinator, under the modules of Community Education, 3,755 jobs had been created for teaching assistants, interns, youth in forestry, youth in hairdressing, community protection and youth under prison service.
The Branch Secretary of the Ghana National Tailors and Dress Makers Association (GNTDA), Mr Salifu Ebenezar Adams, stated that the dress makers would be attached to the Association to complete their training in order for them to be well established.
Mr Adams announced that under the Yendi Branch of the Association 200 dressmakers had been trained. In May this year, he added that 132 of them took part in the Ghana National Tailors and Dress Makers Association Exams and were now waiting for their results.
He said the 31 dress makers presented with sewing machines by Asongtaba would be attached to the Association for practical work.
