Mpasaso assures GES of safety and comfort of teachers

Mpasaso (Ash), Jan. 25, GNA - The chiefs, elders and unit committee of Mpasaso in the Ahafo-Ano South district of Ashanti have assured the Ghana Education Service (GES) and teachers that adequate measures had been put in place to guarantee the safety and comfort of teachers who would be posted to teach in the community.

Nana Tabiri Gyansah III, paramount chief of Mpasaso traditional area, who gave the assurance, appealed to teachers to voluntarily accept postings to the area.

Nana Gyansah was briefing the Ghana News Agency at Mpasaso on Saturday on measures adopted by the community to attract and also maintain teachers in the community.

It is widely believed that because a teacher was last year assaulted by a citizen of Mpasaso coupled with the remoteness of the community, most teachers were shunning the community and refusing postings to the area resulting in inadequacy of teachers there. Nana Gyansah stated that collectively, the chiefs, elders and unit committee had resolved to keep surveillance and report any citizen who harassed or attempted to assault a teacher to the police for the appropriate action.

He said as part of moves to make the stay of teachers in the community more acceptable and comfortable, the chiefs had provided accommodation in readiness to house any teacher posted to the area. "Additionally, I have personally instituted an award scheme starting this year to honour the best teacher with a colour television set", Nana Gyansah stressed.

Nana Gyansah also complained about the deteriorating state of the Mpasaso Primary 'B' School block, which was also negatively impacting on teaching and learning and urged the district assembly to strive to rehabilitate it.

He observed that the school block was constructed in 1950 and had developed cracks with weak pillars thus making it a death trap and also a disincentive to teachers and pupils.
