An assembly member at Oforikrom in Kumasi has appealed to Muslims to attach more importance to secular education to better their socio-economic situation.
Mr. Mustapha Sulemana said it should not be lost on anybody that education was the path to the progress of the individual, community and the nation.
It was for this reason that all children of school going age needed to be enrolled.
He was speaking at a graduation ceremony held for 31 pupils of the Oforikrom Umul Qura Islamic School.
He used the occasion to remind young people in the Zongo communities to be disciplined and law abiding. They should distance themselves from acts of violence, aggression and other bad and deviant social conduct.
Alhaji Amidu Gariba, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the Oforikrom Constituency, asked Muslim parents to provide equal opportunity for both their male and female children to pursue academic careers.
He counseled against the practice of pushing young girls into early marriages, something he said was unhelpful to their development.
He called for effective supervision of children to check the situation where many of them spent more time watching films than reading their books.
Mr. Dominic Yeboah, the head teacher, asked parents to support teachers in the proper upbringing of children.
