N/R Library organizes reading clinic for schools

The Ghana Library Association (GLA) in collaboration with eSyllabus for Africa, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has organized a reading clinic for three schools in the Savelugu/Nanton Municipality.

The beneficiaries are the World Vision sponsored school children who are in the upper primary in Fazihini Methodist Primary, Dingoni E/A Primary and Zieng E/A Primary schools in the Savelugu/Nanton Municipality in the Northern Region. As part of the programme, various items such as; books, pencils, erasers, crayons, bottled water, biscuits and soft drinks, were distributed to the pupils.

Mr Aaron Kuwornu, Northern Regional Librarian, appealed to the pupils to cultivate the habit of reading, and study hard to make good results in their Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE), to brighten their chances of progressing to higher levels of education.

He said the reading clinic was to enable the pupils to access the mobile library and to have an idea as to how a library looked like, since some of the pupils did not have access to the facility.

He indicated that as part of the programme, some 12 teachers from the communities were trained to give those skills and more knowledge to equip their pupils.

Mr Amuda Jimah Mohammed, Northern Regional Chairman of GLA said, it was important to expose children to the library, to enable them acquire knowledge to improve upon their vocabulary.

Mr Issahaka Sadik, Headmaster of Fazihini Methodist Primary School, expressed regret that the school’s library had not been equipped with reading materials to inculcate the habit of reading in the children.

He appealed to GLA, government and its development partners to assist teachers in remote areas to help improve upon teaching and learning in the schools.

Mr Joseph Alhassan, development facilitator for education at World Vision, said the NGO would continue to support education in the Savelugu/ Nanton area so as to improve education.
