Kwasi Nyarko, June 10, GNA-The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in the Eastern Region has donated relief items valued at GHC38, 000 to Kwasi Nyarko, a farming community in the West Akyem Municipality.
The donation was in response to an appeal made by the chiefs and people of the area following a rainstorm which hit the community on Tuesday that destroyed property.
The items included 50 packets of roofing sheets, 60 pieces of blankets,50 pieces of plastic plates, 60 pieces of plastic buckets, 20 bails of used clothing, 35 packets of nails, 60 pieces of students foam mattresses and 500 pieces of mats.
Making the presentation the Eastern Regional Director of NADMO, Mr Ransford Boakye, said more than 1,099 people had been displaced, 129 houses were affected, three schools and two churches had their roofs ripped off.
Mr Boakye said three school children sustained injuries in the rainstorm with one of them going into comma.
He said they were admitted at the Nsawam Government Hospital and are responding to treatment.
Mr Boakye said the region in recent times had experienced heavy rainstorm resulting in destruction of property.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Dr Kwasi Akyem Apea-Kubi, expressed concern about the destruction in the community and said the government would assist them to be come out of their predicament and them to be patient.
The chief of Kwasi Nyarko, Nana Opoku Nyarko, thanked the government for the quick response and appealed to non-governmental organizations, philanthropists and individuals to come to their aid since the damage caused by the rainstorm was so huge that government alone could not do it.
