In a bold and proactive move aimed at combating violent extremism in Ghana, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) recently brought together a dynamic group of stakeholders to sharpen their skills in detecting the tactics of extremists.

This enlightening program took place on November 6, 2024, at the Tumu Municipal Health Directorate's conference hall, bringing together local government representatives, traditional leaders, vibrant youth groups, and civil society organizations—all eager to make a difference. This initiative was organized by the NCCE and proudly funded by the European Union.

The atmosphere was charged as Eliasu Hussein, the Director of NCCE, kicked off the event with a compelling welcome remark.

He shed light on the alarming global trends and strategies employed by extremists who wield violence as their weapon of choice in pursuit of political or economic gain. Eliasu pointed out that they often set their sights on crowded places, manipulating vulnerable individuals by building trust and promising jobs or other enticing benefits. He passionately stated, “The recent insurgencies in the Sahel region pose a significant threat to our nation's peace and safety. That’s why we’re mobilizing our community through engaging initiatives, whether it’s visiting places of worship or organizing impactful events like this workshop, to spread the vital message of preventing violent extremism.”

The excitement continued to build as Abraham Sigenye, a Program Officer at Action for Sustainable Development (ASUDEV) and the lead facilitator, delivered an eye-opening presentation on violent extremism.

He clarified that it involves the “use of violence or threats to achieve ideological, religious, or political ends,” underlining the serious repercussions this can have on society.

Mr. Abraham outlined the devastating impacts of violent extremism, including loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and the emotional trauma that lingers in affected communities. He made it clear that these threats come with a hefty financial burden for the nation.

Calling for united action, he urged the attendees to work together in a multi-pronged approach. He emphasized the importance of promoting inclusive governance, addressing socioeconomic inequalities, fostering interfaith dialogue, and empowering community leaders and youth. His rallying cry for proactive engagement resonated with all present, as he encouraged them to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities, while also fostering constructive conversations to thwart the rise of extremist ideologies.

This event not only aimed to raise awareness but also fueled a collective commitment to building resilient communities ready to stand against the tide of violence. With renewed energy and determination, participants left the workshop ready to make a meaningful impact.
