Nangodi (U/E), Oct 8, GNA - Mr Michael Zure, the District Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS) in charge of the Talensi Nabdam District, has expressed regret about teenage pregnancy in the area especially those in the Junior High Schools.
He said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency during the donation of computers and its accessories and furniture to the Nangodi Primary and Junior School by a French non-governmental organization called Empowering Children of Nangodi (ECN). Mr Zure said the situation was becoming alarming and the worst was that majority of female students who should have completed their education at the Junior High School level in the area had become dropouts.
He welcomed the decision by the District Directorate of Education and the Parents Teacher Associations of some schools in the area to sanction any person found to have impregnated any student. Mr Zure appealed to parents in the area to be more responsible towards the upbringing of their children in education by instilling discipline in them and encouraging them to study hard. The District Director of Education, Mr Francis Ayaaba who received the items on behalf of the schools, commended the NGO for the donation. Mr Francis Sapaat, the headmaster of the school, said between October 2009 and October 2010, the NGO donated 13,352.53 Ghana cedis to the school.
The money was used to rehabilitate two classroom blocks, built a kitchen for the primary school and day nursery and put up a computer laboratory for the school. Mr Gerald Schmitt, the founder and board chairman of the NGO, said his outfit would continue to contribute to the development of many school children in the area.
