NYEP Teachers Angry

Teachers under the National Youth and Employment Programme (NYEP) at Agona Swedru in the Agona West Municipality of the Central Region are preparing vigorously to demonstrate against the government for failing to pay them their 10-month allowance.

According to them, they were issued a letter of engagement by the NYEP headquarters in Accra to start work on August 1, 2010, to August 1, 2012, where they were expected to be given a monthly allowance of GH¢80.

They indicated that they have been paid 14 months allowance out of the 24 months they worked for.

They disclosed that they completed their work about four months without getting their balance.

They stated that efforts to retrieve the rest of their balance have proven futile, as the District Coordinator, Richard Rowland Acquah, who is also the aspiring National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the newly created Akroso Constituency in the Eastern Region tried to assault them verbally when they ask for the money.

The victims who spoke on condition of anonymity stated that the National Coordinator, Mr Abuga Pele just about two weeks ago said in a radio interview that the government has paid all the outstanding arrears of the teachers under the programme.

“When we heard about the payment of our money, we went to Mr Acquaah who told us that the statement made by his boss was just a political talk,” the irate teachers said.

The victims, numbering about 150, promised to use demonstration and other negative tendencies to get their money since they could not contain any more insult from Mr Acquaah.

They accused the government of using their money to embark on its massive campaign.
