The Northern Youth for Peace and Development (NYUPED) has urged the National Road Safety Commission to petition parliament on the amendment of laws on the use of tricycles as a means of public transportation in the country.
According to NYUPED there is the need for the acceptance of the ‘Auto-Rickshaw Tricycles’ as a major means of transportation in the country especially in the three Northern regions.
It said the amendment of the laws would help the overwhelming engagements in the current transportation system since tricycles are already having a wide spread patronage by ordinary Ghanaians in carrying-out their daily duties.
“We call for motorcycles to be used across the country on commercial basis since is already gaining its patronage, we shall propagate it’s suitability and safety as a commercial vehicle since most developing countries within west-Africa are using it,” the group said in a press release.
NYUPED stated that the auto-tricycles are being used as a safe means of transportation in many civilized countries in the world to facilitate major means of transport in remote areas where conventional transporters are unable.
“Notwithstanding, His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana took a ride on the tricycle as an endorsement during his recent visit to Wa in the Upper West Region, where these auto-tricycle have been introduced as means of transport to create immediate jobs for the unemployed youth to alleviate poverty especially in the three Northern regions,” they said.
The leadership of the youth based organisation has consequently called on all stakeholders to act on the urgent call for the acceptance of the tricycle to aid the transportation system in the country.
“We call on the GPRTU, NRSC, Ministry of Roads and Transport, Ghana Highway Authority and other related public-private transport entities to embrace this call,” the statement said.
