National Sanitation Day held in Accra

The maiden National Sanitation Day (NSD), under the auspices of the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) went on successfully in Accra on Saturday.

The NSD, which is a nationwide initiative, was aimed at encouraging Ghanaians to clean their environments to rid the country of filth.

It was also to rekindle the spirit of communal labour among Ghanaians.

The clean-up exercise, which begun at 0600 hours, saw both government officials and members of the public cleaning schools, homes, streets and other public places in the metropolis till 1100 hours.

During the exercise, the Ghana News Agency observed that most shops were closed in the business centres but vehicular movement was thick.

Mr Julius Debrah, Minter of Local Government and Rural Development, expressed satisfaction with the exercise, saying, it had a huge a patronage.

He said the arrangement that was put in place yielded the needed results as most of the markets were cleaned while choked gutters were cleared.

He said the NSD has come to stay and it would be repeated on the first Saturday of every month.
