The eligibility of Alhaji Collins Dauda, Brong Ahafo NDC Regional Chairman and former Member of Parliament for Asutifi South, was challenged over his nationality at the weekend at a registration centre at Mehame in Brong Ahafo.
Alhaji Dauda, a former MP from 1993 to 2000 would have to wait for the Registration Review Committee to decide his fate after the exercise. He was however allowed to register under protest
Mr. Oti Aboagye Kingsley, the Registration Officer at the Methodist Primary School centre where Alhaji Dauda had gone to register on Sunday, March 28, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that it was Mr. Alexander Kwadwo Kontor, an NPP activist who challenged Alhaji Dauda that he is a Burkinabe. The registration officer said the challenge created a misunderstanding between Mr. Kontor and the NDC agent and this led to the destruction of the registration form on which the NDC Chairman was registered.
Mr Aboagye said Alhaji Dauda went to the centre in the company of Mr. Mohammed Kwaku Doku, Brong Ahafo Regional NDC Secretary and a former District Chief Executive for Asunafo, Mallam Issah, Asunafo North Constituency NDC Chairman and three others.
The registration officer reported the matter to the Police about the misunderstanding and the destruction of the registration form and later issued a fresh form to Alhaji Dauda to register under protest. Alhaji Dauda later told the GNA in an interview that he went there only to register and not to cause any commotion as was being peddled in some circles in the constituency. He expressed the hope that the Review Committee would soon "clear" him to enable him to exercise his franchise.
