New Juaben Municipal Assembly fails to elect Presiding Member

Koforidua, March 16, GNA - The New Juaben Municipal Assembly could not elect a Presiding Member after two rounds of voting. This was because none of the candidates could obtain the 54 or more votes as required.

Mr Abdul Rahman, a government appointee, had 52 votes as against 25 for Mr Sefa Boateng, an elected assembly member, with one spoiled ballot.

The two candidates got the same figures during the two rounds of votin= g. The spoiled ballot in the first voting had the inscription 911 x 2' written on it and it was the same thing written in the second election. Sitting was adjourned.

Mr Samuel Donkor, the Municipal Co-ordinator who presided over the meeting, told members that they would be recalled for another election and that fresh nominations would be opened. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency one of the government appointees, Dr Nana Twum Barimah, described the scene as 93deplorable and shameful" and expressed the hope that things would be corrected at their next meeting. The two candidates said they would still contest for the position.
