Koforidua, Aug 3, GNA - Lack of land to locate a waste disposal and treatment plant within the New Juaben Municipality has compelled the Municipal Assembly to seek land from surrounding districts. The Municipal Assembly has therefore set up a technical committee to explore and negotiate with the Yilo Krobo, East Akim, Akuapem North and Suhum-Kraboa-Coaltar district assemblies.
The Municipal Chief Executive(MCE), Nana Kwasi Adjei Boateng, said this at the Second Ordinary Meeting of the assembly on Monday. He said in response to public concerns, the assembly had adopted some measures to deal with the evacuation and disposal of refuse, establish a Waste Management Department and spend 1.27 billion cedis on waste management this year.
As part of measures to raise the standard of education in the Municipality, the assembly, in conjunction with the Municipal Education Service, spent about 114 million cedis to conduct a Municipal wide Mock Examination for all basic schools up to JSS two to serve as a basis for promoting pupils. Nana Adjei Boateng said the assembly spent 292 million cedis to assist five Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) with roofing sheets to complete projects.
On roads, he said the Urban Roads Department was using votes from the Road Fund to rehabilitate and improve a number of streets and roads within the municipality. On the Municipal Mutual Health Insurance Scheme, he said measures including continuous public education, provision of accommodation, recruitment and training of personnel were going on.
