Nii Afotey-Agbo visits Ho Prisons

Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, Volta Regional Minister on Thursday visited the Ho Prisons, to acquaint himself with work at the Correctional Centre.

“I have been at post as the Regional Minister for the past six months and thought I should know how you are doing, and the challenges; for me to make an input,” he told the officers.

Some of the challenges listed by Mr Martin Darku, Chief Superintendent of Prisons (CSP) and Acting Director, were the unbearable cost of the fortnightly dislodging of the septic tank due to the high water table in the area and cost constraints in installing a stand-by generator.

Another issue was the phenomenon of inmates returning to prison over similar offences due to rejection by families and lack of capital to start vocations learnt while in prison.

Nii Afotey-Agbo suggested that the Correctional Centre liaised with LESDEP for skill training guides and startup kits.

The Minister was conducted round by Mr Darku where he (Minister) interacted with the inmates in various languages, telling them about hardwork and good values.

Nii Afotey-Agbo at the females section advised them against allowing their emotions to take a better part of them in conflicts.

At the male section with 393 inmates and the female section with 16 inmates, the minister promised to give the prisons a bull, some quantity of rice and maize for the celebration of the coming Christmas.

I am not giving you the bull and food and expect you to continue to stay here, but to enjoy the Christmas and reform,” he stated.
