....To Benefit From Sister Relations
An initiative by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama in 2011 for Northern Region to be in a Sister Province Relationship with Jiangxi Province of China is beginning to yield fruits. The beginning of this relationship was marked by signing of agreements between the Northern Region and the Jiangxi Province. The signing ceremony took place on the 9th of July, 2014 when the Vice Governor of the Jiangxi Province Ms. Xie Ru led a high powered delegation to the region.
During the signing of the pact the Regional Minister, Honourable Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna initialed for the region while Honourable Ms. Xie Ru, the Vice Governor Jiangxi Province of China initialed for Her Province. Present at the signing ceremony were the Deputy Regional Minister, Honourable A.B.A. Fuseini and some officials of the Regional Co-ordinating Council.
Her Excellency Sun Baohong, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, was also present to support the Chinese Delegation.
In his welcome remarks, the Regional Minister, Honourable Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna noted that, the presence of the delegation in Tamale was a testimony to their commitment to strengthen the Sister Province Relationship between the Northern Region and Jiangxi Province.
Reiterating the significance of the meeting the Honourable Regional Minister was hopeful that the co-operation between the two could bring about a lot of benefits for the people of the two regions.
The Honourable Regional Minister stated that the Northern Region has a lot of potentials in Agricultural and Animal Husbandry which could serve as basis for industrialization to the Chinese partners.
He then appealed to them to increase the Scholarship Awards to deserving Ghanaian students to study in China in the disciplines of medicine and Urban Planning. He also appealed to the Governor to support in the building of dams for irrigation projects as well as more investment in road infrastructure development in the region.
On her part, Her Excellency the Governor of the Jiangxi Province was very appreciative of the warm reception given them. She said that the visit has afforded her the opportunity to discover that the Northern Region of Ghana has similar climatic features to that of her Province. She promised to do all that she could to cement the relationship between the two regions for a brighter future.
As part of the gesture of the Jiangxi Province the Chinese have offered five (5) scholarships per annum to the Northern region for qualified persons in the field of Sciences and Engineering.
As part of the programme, the Governor of the Jiangxi Province Ms. Xie Ru donated a number of school items including computers, books, school bags, sports materials at the valued at Twenty Thousand Dollars (US$20,000) to the Zogbeli Cluster of Schools in Tamale Metropolis.
