Tema, June 4, GNA - The Northern Alliance For a Better Ghana (NAFBEG),a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), has appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to prosecute Mr Kwabena Amankwa Asiamah, Member of Parliament (MP) for Fanteakwa for insulting Northerners last Monday on Radio. In a statement signed by its General Secretary and copied to the Ghan= a News Agency in Tema on Friday, the NGO said the claim by Mr Amankwa Asiamah on

Peace FM that northerners 93cannot be any better in life, and that poverty= is their

portion," was a blatant disregard for northerners. The statement said the utterance of the MP was also a violation of Section 207 of

the Criminal Code Act 29, which falls under offensive conduct or insulting behavior. NAFBEG said even though the MP had apologized, punitive measures should be

taken against him to deter others. "We will urge the IGP to ensure that the MP is brought to book, for= , we believe

that punishment is for correction." While calling for the prosecution of the MP, NAFBEG also lauded President

Mills for authorizing the Ministry of Finance to release 25 million dollars into the

Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) to roll out its development

programmes. NAFBEG mentioned a GH¢3.0 million-post-food recovery programme to

rehabilitate 6,000 households that lost crops and properties during the recent

Northern Ghana floods as one of such programmes. It noted that the farmer-support programme, which would provide fertilizers and

improved seeds to farmers, who lost all or part of their livelihood during the floods

last year, was a step in the right direction. 4 June 11
