Northern region marks farmers' day at Kitieg

Kitieg (NR), Nov 5, GNA - Mr Lawrence D. Kwotuah, a 54-year old farmer from the East Mamprusi District was on Friday adjudged the Northern Regional Best Farmer at the regional awards ceremony held at Kitieg, a suburb of the Saboba, in the Saboba District.

He took away a grinding mill, three packets of roofing sheets, one bicycle, a radio set, a bag of fertilizer, a pair of Wellington boots, a full wax prints and six machetes.

Twenty other farmers received various.

Mr Ernest Debrah, the Northern Regional Minister, called on the people of the region to engage in farming that would help address the poverty situation in the region.

He said there were a lot of potentials in the region and if tapped the Northern Region would over take other regions in terms of development. Mr Debrah appealed to the people to work and ensure that the impending general elections were peaceful.

"Try to put people who think the December election would not peaceful to shame by comporting yourselves during the campaigns.'' He commended the chiefs and people of the Saboba/Cheriponi area for maintaining peace over the years and called on other districts to emulate them.

Mr Azumah Namoro Sanda, the District Chief Executive for Saboba/Cheriponi, appealed to the government to assist in addressing the perennial water problem in the area.

He said at the moment the entire community was depending on a dam as the only source of water.

Mr Sanda also appealed to the youth and other farmers to venture into guinea fowl farming.
