The Northern regional Minister, Abdullah Abubakari has paid a visit to bereaved family of Madam Azara Alhassan, a nursing mother who died in yesterday's flooding at Kulnyevila in the Sagnarigu district of the Northern region.
Madam Azara Alhassan, a middle age woman was reported swept away by the floods when she and her colleagues were returning from market on Sunday.
Hundreds of people have been displaced in communities including Belpela, Sawaba, Datoyili, Gumani, Sagnarigu, Kalariga and Kulnyevila.
The Northern Minister was accompanied by the District Chief Executive for Sagnarigu, Mohammed Alhassan Sorugudow, the Northern regional Coording of the National Disaster and Management Organization, Alhaji Abdulai Silimboma, some members of the district and regional Security Council.
The Northern regional Minister, Abdullah Abubakari speaking to the media advised resident to stop building on water ways to avert circumstatnces of that nature.
He said Tamale is growing steadily and the way of life of resident must change to correspond with the urbanized nature of the city.
Mr. Abubakari bemoaned that even when government want to follow the developmental planning to avert flooding and other disaster, the citizen stand to revolts against such initiatives to the detriment of their own and their future generation.
He acknowledge d the fact that the flooding was a natural disaster but however indicted there are human undertones that has led to the flooding in the area.
The minister said a lot of people have defied regulations and policies and build on water ways.
He therefore appealed to residents of Tamale to come to the realization that Tamale is a city and it behooves on them to live their lives in line with trends by following rules and regulations to avert such circumstances.
He told the people to take their destiny into their own hands as well as take precautionary measures since government support alone cannot leverage their loses.
He on behalf of the President extend his condolence to the bereaved family.
Meanwhile residents in the area has attributed the flooding to the poor drainage system as well as the habit of some residents building on water ways.
They however appealed to the Sagnarigu District Assembly to as a matter of urgency improve upon the drainage system in the area.
