Oboadaka (E/R), Sept 2, GNA - The people of Oboadaka near Suhum in the Eastern Region, have embarked on clean-up exercise as one of several activities aimed at improving sanitation in the town. Led by Nene Tettey, elder of the community, the group cleaned their boreholes, cleared weeds on the shoulders of the main feeder road, desilted gutters and carted garbage. Mr. Tettey later told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the exercise, which was aimed at supplementing the efforts of the Suhum-Kraboa-Coaltar District Assembly to maintain a clean environment, would be a regular feature.
He announced plans by the Town Development Committee (TDC) to improve sanitation in the area and urged members of the community to regularly pay their dues towards that goal. Mr. Freeman Madji, Executive Director of Abibiman Sankofa Cultural Movement (ASCUM), a Community-Based Organisation (CBO) with a branch at Oboadaka, who provided the community with logistics and labour for the exercise, pledged his support for future cleanups. Mr. Madji asked benevolent societies to help promote the welfare of society as a whole instead of catering for their members only. 02 Sept 09
