The Ghana Police Service has reportedly arrested one individual following a confrontation between some candidate supporters and police officers at the ongoing re-run of the Ashanti Region Council of State representative election.
According to a report by citinewsroom.com sighted by GhanaWeb, the suspect is believed to be a supporter of the former National Democratic Congress (NDC) chairman of the Ashanti Region, Yaw Obimpeh.
The supporters are said to have defied police orders to remain behind a barricade set up at the venue for the election, leading to the arrest of the suspect.
The re-run of the election follows violence that marred the exercise last week when some thugs stormed the venue, destroyed electoral materials, and attacked officials of the Electoral Commission.
As part of improved measures to manage security for the re-run of the election, vehicle movement has been restricted at the venue, with six police checkpoints mounted along the route leading to the Prempeh Assembly Hall where the election is taking place.
Also, several police personnel and crowd control equipment have been deployed to the venue.
