Takoradi, August 2,- GNA-Mr. Vincent K. Fiati, Western Regional Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has said only the Premier Driving School based at Sekondi, had been licensed to operate and train potential drivers in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis. He said though seven others have expressed their willingness to train more people, they have not met the basic requirements of the DVLA and could therefore, not operate till such requirements are met. Mr. Fiati said these in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Takoradi on Tuesday.
He said the introduction of oral and in-traffic tests by the DVLA was assisting several potential drivers to understand and obey the highway codes.
Mr. Fiati said the use of a book titled "safe driving, rules of the road" has been of tremendous help to drivers. He said the DVLA was facing increasing demand for the computerised driving licenses and this was putting a lot of stress on the staff. Mr Fiati said some organisations do not recognise and accept the "interim cover note", issued to some drivers by the DVLA. He stressed that the small office sizes and premises of the DVLA was not conducive, due to the poor nature of the yard and the lack of brake testing machines.
Mr. Fiati however, stressed that the provision of computers, photocopier and other accessories, had greatly improved their operations.
He stressed that the DVLA had managed to drive away middlemen from its premises and potential drivers were free to transact any business without any interference. Aug. 02 05
