The Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, has donated relief items to victims of the recent floods that swept through parts of the Akyemansa District of the Eastern region.
Some communities in the district including Abenase, Praho, Kotokuom, Zevor, Ayeboafo and its surrounding areas were submerged when the Pra and Birim rivers broke their banks. Property running into several millions of cedis were damaged or destroyed. Several hectares of farmland and rice plantations were also affected.
Mr Oppong-Nkrumah donated items including mattresses, blankets, buckets, insecticides, mosquito nets and food items to the affected residents of the floods. He observed the floods were caused by the obstruction of water by a man made dam constructed by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, and not by the activities of illegal miners as earlier claimed.
He recommended that residents who lived in waterways be moved further from the areas and the rivers dredged to prevent future occurrences.
The MP expressed gratitude to the Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) Mr. Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh and his deputy in charge of operations Mr. Abu Ramadan for their swift response to calls to support those affected by the flood.
He assured residents of more support in the coming days and urged them not to despair.
