Osu Manste visits schools

Accra, Oct. 30, GNA - As part of its efforts in ensuring that the children of Osu enjoy quality education, the Osu Divisional Council has allocated GH GH¢300,000 Ghana cedis for the improvement of infrastructure in the basic schools of the area. The Council will also help to improve upon the security system of the schools by fencing them and also asking the police to patrol the area at night.

Interacting with teachers during a visit by elders of the Osu Divisional Council on Thursday to listen to the problems of schools in the area, Nii Okwei Nortey, Osu Stool Secretary, called for the support of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to cooperate with the Council in solving the educational needs of the area. "The Council has allocated 60 per cent of its resources for education purposes and we call on the AMA not to delay in awarding such contracts," he said.

Enumerating the problems of schools in the area, Mrs Stella Abbey, Osu Doku Educational Circuit Supervisor, called for more facilities for the schools since school enrolment had increased with the introduction of the capitation grant. "Schools in this area lack toilet facilities, water, libraries. Beside these, schools in the area have lunatics and drugs users to contend with, putting the lives of teachers and pupils at risk," she added. She also called on the traditional leaders to frequently visit the schools to boost the morale of the teachers and also build a community library to inculcate in the children the culture of reading. Responding to the request of the teachers, Nii Nortey Owuo III, President of the Osu Divisional Area, pledged to set up a council to liaise with parents and teachers of pupils of schools in the area to ensure that they played their parts effectively in the education of their awards. "Also, we shall collaborate with school authorities to design appropriate incentive packages to serve as motivation to the teachers." The visit took the Osu Mantse and his entourage to Osu Presbyterian Preparatory and Junior High School and Osu Presbyterian Cluster of schools.
