Otuam community cries for water

Mankessim, March 9, GNA - Mr Moses Arthur, Manager, Modern International Micro Finance Limited, a non-banking "susu" savings and loans venture, has appealed to the Mfantseman District Assembly, benevolent organisations and individuals to help stem an acute water shortage that has hit the people of Otuam.

Mr Arthur said the water situation in the town was becoming unbearable and some of the citizens of the fishing community had decided to desert the town because they could not afford to buy a bucket of water at 1,500 cedis from private water tanker operators.

Making the appeal through Ghana News Agency at Mankessim on Wednesday, Mr Arthur said the only borehole, which served the town with a population of about 5,000 was malfunctioning.

People have been keeping wake at a pond their other source of water to scoop the little water that accumulated from time to time he said. When Mr George Kuntu Blankson, Member of Parliament for Mfantseman East was contacted, he confirmed the story but said he had discussed the problem with Mr Robert Quainoo-Arthur, the District Chief Executive and Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, Minister of Works and Housing and gave the assurance that the problem would soon be addressed.
