Paramount Chief calls for peace in Bawku

Tongo(UE), May 24, GNA - The Paramount Chief of the Talensi Traditional Area in the Upper East Region, Tong-Rana Nab Sabalug Nemalteng, has appealed to the warring factions in Bawku to give peace a chance. He stressed the need for the factions to look beyond the present and allow peace to prevail for the sake of posterity and said, "I am very much upset about the conflict situation in Bawku". The Paramount Chief made the appeal when the Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Mark Woyongo, paid a courtesy call on him in his Palace at Tongo.

He reminded the warring factions that misunderstandings between them should be settled through dialogue and not weapons. Naba Sabalug Nemalteng said many Mamprusis and Kusasis had intermarried and had nurtured good families, adding that such good families and relationships should not be destroyed.

He said he would go to Bawku to talk for peace and convince the two factions to stop the fight so as to pave way for development and noted that the conflict in Bawku was not only affecting the area but the entire region. He noted that money used by Government in maintaining peace could have been used to develop the Region which is among the poorest in the country. The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Woyongo, who was in Tongo to interact with the National Democratic Party (NDC) executives and see how the party was faring in the area, commended the Paramount Chief for maintaining peace in the area and the successful enskinment of some of his sub-chiefs. He urged chiefs in the Region to emulate the Paramount Chief of Talensi to ensure that peace prevailed in the Region. 24 May 10
