Manso (B/A) Feb 22, GNA - Mr Jarvis R. Agyeman-Badu, Nkoranza district director of education, on Friday advised parents to minimize expenses on clothing, funerals, weddings and other social activities and invest in their children's education.
He expressed disappointment that some parents shirk their responsibilities to their children thereby resulting in some of them being thrown unto the streets.
Mr Agyeman-Badu was addressing a meeting of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the Methodist primary school at Manso, near Nkoranza on Friday.
He said children were gifts from God and urged parents to help them grown into responsible citizens.
Mr Agyeman-Badu appealed to PTAs to collaborate with unit committees to enact byelaws to prevent school children from attending video shows, concerts, dances, funerals and other ceremonies. He also asked parents to assist teachers to work assiduously to raise the standard of education in the area. Mr Albert Nkrumah, headteacher of the school, said the main challenge facing school children was the lack of supervision by parents at home after classes.
Mr Frank Baidoo, chairman of the school's management committee and Mr Stephen Ameyaw, PTA chairman, in a joint statement urged parents to visit the school regularly to enable them assess their children's progress.
Each parent is to contribute 3,000 cedis towards the purchase of a set of football jerseys and indoor games kits to promote sports and games among the pupils.
