Parents at Nkorang admit contributing to falling standards of education

Nkorang (Ash), Nov. 23, GNA - Parents at Nkorang near Nkawie in the Atwima-Nwabiagya district of Ashanti have admitted that the poor standard of education in the area was due to lack of effective parental control of children at home.

They noted that most of the parents failed to instil discipline in their children and allowed them to patronize video centres and engaged in other social activities instead of studying at home. The parents made the admission at a Parent-Teacher-Association (PTA) forum at Nkorang on Tuesday to address the persistent pupil's poor performances in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). However, they attributed part of the problem to lack of effective teaching and professional commitment by teachers and the head-teacher's poor supervision of teaching and learning.

Mr Isaac Mensah, assemblyman for the area, said the local basic school lacked adequate textbooks and other vital teaching and learning materials and appealed to the district education directorate to address the problem.

Mr Jackson Osei-Kufuor, PTA Chairman, said indiscipline among the pupils coupled with parent's apathy undermined the effective promotion of quality education in the area.

He expressed regret about the attitude of some PTA executives who had abandoned their responsibilities and advised them to rekindle their commitment to help solve the falling standards of education in the area. Mr Osei-Kufuor said through financial contributions, the PTA had managed to provide some essential infrastructure in the school and urged the members to contribute meaningfully towards the school's development. Nana Kwasi Boakye, chief of Nkorang, expressed concern about the persistent defecation in the classrooms and called on the perpetrators to stop.
