Passengers told to confront reckless drivers during the holidays

Mampong, (Ash), Dec. 20, GNA - The Mampong Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Kwaku Ayeso Opare-Addo on Monday advised travellers for the holidays to be bold to confront reckless drivers who put their lives at risk.

He said passengers have a right and responsibility to face up to drivers who have the tendency to misbehaviour on the roads, since in most accidents it is passengers who tend to sustain worst casualties. In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Chief Supt. Opare-Addo said travellers for the Yuletide must, thus support the law enforcement agencies to ensure sanity on the roads.

He said the Division, comprising Sekyere West, Sekyere East, Afigya Sekyere and Ejura-Sekyi-Dumasi Districts of Ashanti, would step up patrols on the roads during the holiday session.

The Divisional Commander said they are also intensifying road safety education for drivers plying roads in the area to reduce end-of-year festivities related road accidents.

Chief Supt. Opare-Addo advised drivers to be extra careful during the holidays, and desist from the temptation of speeding because they want to make more money at the expense of the lives of travellers. He also warned them to observe road signs and regulations in order not to have problems with the law.

Chief Supt. Opare-Addo, though could not provide figures, said the incidence of fatal road accidents in the area has been negligible this year as compared to last year.
